IF YOU ARE STOPPED BY THE POLICE
- Keep your hands on the steering wheel.
- Show your identification and proof of insurance if it is requested.
- Be respectful and non-confrontational.
- If the officer asks your permission to search your vehicle, say no!
- If you consent to a search your vehicle you give up one of your most important constitutional rights.
- In certain cases, your car can be searched without a warrant as long as the police have probable cause.
- If the officer searches your vehicle despite your wishes, do not physically resist.
- Remember the Officers' badge & patrol car numbers
- Do not make any statements or comments regarding the incident.
- If you are injured, take photographs as soon as possible.
IF YOU ARE TAKEN TO THE POLICE STATION
- If you are arrested or taken to the police station, you have a right to have a lawyer present while you are being questioned.
- If the police prevent you from contacting a lawyer, remain silent and refuse to answer questions.
- Tell the police nothing except your name and address.
- Do not give any stories or explanations for what happened.
- You can make your defense later, in court, based on what you and your lawyers decide is best.
- What you say to the police can be used against you to file criminal charges against you.
- Do not agree to sign your name to any written statements.
- The police are not your friend!
